Hair Replacement FAQ – Men, Women & Medical Wigs in Chicago
Hair loss raises real questions — about comfort, appearance, cost and long-term results. This page answers the most common questions about men’s hair systems (toupees / hair units), women’s hair toppers, and medical wigs, and explains how non-surgical hair replacement works at Kaelyss Hair Replacement Studio in Chicago.
General Hair Loss & Non-Surgical Hair Replacement
What causes hair loss in men and women?
Hair loss can be genetic, hormonal, medical or stress-related. Men most commonly experience androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness), while women often notice diffuse thinning along the part or crown due to hormones, postpartum shedding, menopause, autoimmune conditions or medical treatments. Lifestyle, nutrition and stress can also influence how quickly thinning becomes visible.
What is non-surgical or non-invasive hair replacement?
Non-surgical hair replacement refers to custom hair systems, hair toppers or medical wigs made from real human hair that restore the appearance of fuller hair without surgery, scarring or downtime. These solutions are attached externally and designed to look natural at normal conversation distance, in photos and in different lighting.
How does non-surgical hair replacement compare to a hair transplant?
Hair transplants are surgical, irreversible and depend on having strong donor hair. Non-surgical hair replacement offers immediate, predictable coverage, works even when donor hair is limited, and allows you to adjust style, length and density over time. Many clients in Chicago choose a hair system, topper or medical wig either instead of surgery or alongside medical treatments.
Men’s Hair Systems, Toupees & Hair Units
Men often search using terms like toupee, hair system, hair unit or hair patch. These all refer to modern non-surgical hair replacement systems designed to restore a natural hairline and density in a way that fits gym, work and social life in Chicago.
Is a hair system the same as a toupee?
Yes. “Toupee” is an older word for what we now call a hair system or hair unit. Modern systems are custom-designed, undetectable, made with real human hair and tailored to your hairline, density, face shape and lifestyle.
How are men’s hair systems attached?
Most of our clients wear bonded systems, secured with professional-grade adhesive or tape for full-time wear. This allows you to live normally — including gym sessions, showers, sleep and Chicago humidity — without worrying about movement. Removable or hybrid options are available in specific cases and discussed during consultation.
Can I work out, swim or shower with a hair system?
Yes. Bonded hair systems are designed for everyday life: weight training, cardio, swimming, showering and sleeping. We’ll review realistic expectations and after-care so you know how to treat your system after intense workouts or activities.
How natural will my hairline and scalp look?
We use advanced base materials and hand-tied hairlines that mimic natural growth. When customized and installed correctly, modern hair systems are virtually undetectable. Most clients report that even close friends and family simply notice they “look better” without realizing a system is in place.
How long does a men’s hair system last?
Lifespan depends on hair length, base type, how often you train or swim, and how closely you follow after-care instructions. On average, systems last several months with regular professional maintenance. During consultation we’ll outline realistic timelines so you can budget for future replacements.
Will a hair system damage my scalp or natural hair?
When installed and maintained correctly, hair systems are designed to be gentle on the scalp. We use professional products and removal techniques to minimize stress on your skin and any existing hair. Clients who attempt at-home removal with harsh products are more likely to experience irritation, which is why we recommend maintenance appointments.

Women’s Hair Toppers
What is a hair topper?
A hair topper is a partial hairpiece designed to add volume and coverage to thinning areas such as the part or crown, while blending seamlessly with your natural hair. It clips or bonds onto your hair for targeted coverage without needing a full wig.
How is a topper different from a wig or extensions?
A wig covers the entire head. Extensions add length and fullness through your mid-lengths and ends. A topper focuses on the top and crown, where many women first notice thinning. It is ideal when you still have hair but want more density or coverage at the scalp.
Who is a good candidate for a hair topper?
Toppers are ideal for women with thinning along the part, crown or frontal area caused by genetics, postpartum shedding, hormones, stress or early alopecia. If your hair loss is very advanced or patchy, we may recommend a medical wig instead.
Are hair toppers comfortable for daily wear?
Yes. When properly fitted, hair toppers are lightweight, breathable and secure. We design your base size, attachment method and density so that it feels stable but not heavy. You can choose clip-in options (removable) or bonded options for longer-term wear.
Can hair toppers be styled or colored?
Human-hair toppers can be cut, styled and heat-styled like natural hair. We can also tone and refine color within safe limits. Strong chemical color changes should always be discussed in-studio so we protect the lifespan of your topper.

Medical Wigs & Cranial Prostheses
What is a medical wig or cranial prosthesis?
A medical wig (also called a cranial prosthesis) is designed for individuals experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy, alopecia or other medical conditions. It prioritizes comfort, scalp sensitivity and secure coverage for everyday life.
How is a medical wig different from a fashion wig?
Fashion wigs are typically built for occasional wear and may use heavier caps or synthetic fibers. Medical wigs are constructed with softer, more breathable caps and are designed to be worn for longer periods by clients with sensitive scalps or complete hair loss.
Are medical wigs suitable for sensitive scalps during treatment?
Yes. Medical wigs use smooth, lightweight materials to minimize irritation. During your consultation we discuss your treatment plan, scalp sensitivity and any medical restrictions so we can recommend the most comfortable cap and attachment options.
Can medical wigs be covered by insurance?
Some insurance plans reimburse a portion of a medical wig when prescribed as a cranial prosthesis. Coverage and requirements vary by provider. We can provide detailed receipts and documentation describing the wig as a cranial prosthesis, which many clients use when submitting claims. Final coverage decisions are made by your insurance company.

Maintenance, Longevity & At-Home Care
How often does my hair system, topper or wig need professional maintenance?
Most bonded men’s systems and women’s toppers require professional maintenance every 3–5 weeks. Clip-in toppers and removable medical wigs can often go longer between studio visits, but still benefit from periodic deep cleaning, re-styling and checks on fit and comfort.
How do I wash and care for human-hair systems at home?
We recommend sulfate-free shampoos, gentle conditioners and lukewarm water. Avoid rough rubbing or twisting. Blot with a towel, detangle with a wide-tooth comb and use heat tools on moderate settings only. At your installation, we give specific instructions tailored to your piece and lifestyle.
Does lifestyle (gym, swimming, travel) affect lifespan?
Yes. Frequent workouts, swimming, sun exposure and heat styling can shorten lifespan, just like they can with natural hair. This doesn’t mean you have to change your lifestyle — it simply means we choose appropriate bases and adhesives, and set realistic expectations for how long each piece will last before needing replacement.
What happens when it is time for a replacement?
During maintenance visits we monitor the condition of your system or topper. When we see that the base or hair quality is nearing the end of its useful life, we discuss timing for a replacement and can begin designing the next piece so you have a smooth transition with no gaps in your appearance.
